Ants are not mammals so they have a different live cycle than humans. Below is a small description of their growth phases.
EggsAnts start their life off as eggs. They are oval shaped and around 1 mm long.

LarvaOnce the egg looks like what we would consider an egg they are in the larva stage. In this stage the eat food regurgitated by other adults. While they grow they shed their skin many times.

PupaCloser to the time they are an adult the larva spins a cocoon around itself and pupates or grows into an ant. The picture above is what a fire ant female looks like in that stage.

Much like humans ants are social beings. While humans are more social lately with Facebook, we do enjoy the company of other humans. Humans don't live in colonies unless you count cities as colonies. Because the ants work so diligently a song about their marching and providing for the colony is appropriate. To also assume that they have human like behavior is normal. While ants climb trees and pick up sticks, they may not do it in pairs or exact amounts the song implies, but they certainly work together.

- They don't have ears! Vibrations through the ground is how they "hear". Their feet are their ears. Pixar had it wrong!
- They don't have lungs either! Oxygen goes in tiny holes all over the ant’s body and carbon dioxide leaves through the same holes.
