Robert D. Singleton or Bob Singleton was the music director for a few seasons of Barney and Friends. It was during this time that "The Ants Go Marching" was done. I feel that the rationale behind it was to make a fun song about ants for kids. The original song however, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" dates back to 1863 and was popularized during the American Civil War to express the desire for the safe return of soldiers.
Bob Singleton has been recognized many times for his talents by receiving many types of honors and awards. He doesn't just specialize in children's music, he has composed, produced and engineered in many different genres throughout his career. |
As stated to the left, it is stated that "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" was written with soldiers returning home safely in mind. However, it has been admitted by its writer, Patrick Gilmore, that the song is not an original. The melody came from a Civil War drinking song, "Johnny Fill Up the Bowl". From this we can see that a lot of things are inspired by something else.
